Valerie joined the ICEP Europe team in 2007 and has been a regular tutor on our Dyslexia and Inclusion courses. She has worked in the area of special needs for most of her career and during this time has contributed significantly to training teachers in the development of assessment and teaching methods for pupils with dyslexia. She is a former head of the Belfast Education and Library Board’s Peripatetic Support Service, with responsibility for managing services for Specific Learning Difficulties, Visual Impairment and Hearing Impairment. She also managed the setting up and running of the N.I. Dept. of Education’s Regional Vision Resource Base. As a member of the N.I. Dyslexia Task Group (2001-2005), she contributed to the subsequent report. Valerie describes this report on Dyslexia as a “catalyst to change” which led to significant improvements in regional provision and recognition of dyslexia support across the province. As a part-time tutor with Stranmillis University College, she presently delivers the ATS and AMBDA programmes. In recognition of her contribution to special education, Valerie was awarded an MBE for services to education in May 2015.
